Have you ever tried to load up a website

only to be met with the message that the site’s exceeded the maximum bandwidth for the day, and to please try again later? Ever wonder what this “bandwidth” stuff is anyway? Well, if you’re the least bit interested in setting up a site of your own, it can be a pretty important term.

Bandwidth is the amount of data

that can potentially be transferred at one time. When you’re looking at various web hosting options, you’ll usually see a section that will tell you how much bandwidth your site would have available to use with each particular web hosting plan. You’ll typically find more expensive plans offering more bandwidth. Be careful with plans that offer “unlimited bandwidth” and read all of the fine print that goes along with that offer. There are often rules and regulations applied, and if you go over what that web host deems acceptable for bandwidth use you may find yourself paying additional fees for it.

Those that just want a small personal site

and don’t expect a lot of traffic, or to have a lot of media on their site, probably won’t have a problem with bandwidth and can get by with basic website hosting services. Those that expect to see a higher volume, such as businesses, need to be sure to go with a hosting plan that will be able to handle heavy bandwidth use. If you already have a site up, you can use a web traffic report to get a better idea of how many people view your site, and how much bandwidth you need. Many companies will provide these reports for you, or you can install a code that will allow you to track it yourself.

You can always upgrade your web host package

if and when your site becomes more popular, so bandwidth shouldn’t be a problem. Just be sure to do so before the traffic becomes more than your current plan can handle.
