Uploading Data to Your Linux Hosted Website

You’ve been thinking about it for a while, and have finally gone and signed up with a linux web host. Congratulations! You’ve got your content all set up, and now you just need to know how to get it on there so that it will show when anyone accesses your website. Not a problem. There are a couple of ways to go about this.

The most common method

is to upload things to your website via an FTP client. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. The FTP client allows you to transfer data from your computer to the server that your site is hosted on. FTP clients may seem a little bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s extremely easy to use. All you have to do it input your site’s login information, select the location you want to upload to, and select the files you want to go there. Viola! Web content uploaded. Create a new folder on the FTP client under you server/site information, and you’ve got a new location on your site. Nearly all web hosts accept FTP clients for uploads.

Some linux web hosting companies

provide webpage editors allow you to upload directly through their program, eliminating the need for an FTP client. If you want to use the program you build your website in to upload to your site as well, be sure that your site supports the program.

Some linux web hosts

will actually provide their customer with a program that allows them to upload content through their browser. This option can typically be found on the control panel, and looks similar to an FTP client interface, only a tad simpler.

If none of these options appeal to you

a quick linux hosting search will bring up a myriad of programs that will allow you to upload items to your website. Just be sure that the program you choose is compatible with your linux website host.
